How much does a business website cost?

Short answerIt depends on how many pages it has, whether the copy needs writing, whether it needs an online shop or bookings, and who looks after the domain, hosting, maintenance and SEO afterwards. The usual approach is to pay for the whole design up front and for everything else separately. The alternative is a monthly fee, like ours of €42 a month + VAT, with no upfront payment, no minimum term and SEO included.

What makes a website cost more or less

  • The number of pages and sections.
  • Copy and photos: whether you provide them or they need to be produced.
  • The features it needs, such as an online shop, bookings, a customer area or several languages.
  • Whether the design starts from a template or from scratch.
  • Whether it has to connect to other software the business already uses.

The costs that don't always appear in the quote

Many quotes only cover the design, but once the website is live there are still costs someone has to pay:

  • The domain, which is renewed every year.
  • Hosting, the server the website runs on, which is also paid periodically.
  • Maintenance: security updates, backups and fixing whatever stops working.
  • Changes, for example when prices, opening hours or photos need updating.
  • SEO, the work that gets the website showing up on Google when someone searches for what you do in your area.

Before comparing prices, ask what is included and what is charged separately, because two quotes for the same amount can cover very different things.

One-off payment or monthly fee

There are two common ways to pay for a website. With a one-off payment you pay for the design at the start and later costs are separate. With a monthly fee you don't pay anything up front and the provider looks after the website while you pay the fee.

One-off paymentMonthly fee
At the startYou pay for the whole designNothing or almost nothing
AfterwardsDomain, hosting and maintenance, usually separateDepends on what the fee includes
If you stop needing itIt is already paid forYou cancel, if there is no minimum term
Suits you ifYou have the money and someone to look after the siteYou'd rather avoid a large expense and have someone else handle it

What to ask before you sign up

  1. What does the price include and what is charged separately?
  2. Is there a minimum term? What happens if I cancel?
  3. Whose name is the domain registered in?
  4. Is SEO included or charged separately?
  5. Will the website look good on mobile?
  6. How long do you take to make a change when I ask?
